Liver function test (LFT) in Tirupati

Quick answer

A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a comprehensive blood panel measuring total and direct bilirubin, liver enzymes (SGOT/AST, SGPT/ALT, Alkaline Phosphatase), and proteins (Albumin, Total Protein). It detects liver inflammation, jaundice, fatty liver, and medication side effects. Done in our own laboratory at Nareddy Care in Tirupati.

What do Liver Function (LFT) results mean?

0.2–1.2 mg/dLTotal Bilirubin (Normal)
< 40 U/LSGOT / AST (Normal)
< 45 U/LSGPT / ALT (Normal)

Bilirubin above 2.0 mg/dL produces visible yellowish tint in the eyes and skin (jaundice). Elevated SGPT/ALT indicates active liver cell inflammation or fatty liver changes.

Who should get an Liver Function (LFT) test?

  • Anyone with yellow eyes, yellow skin, or dark mustard-colored urine (jaundice)
  • Patients with unexplained nausea, loss of appetite, or right upper stomach pain
  • Individuals taking long-term medications, antibiotics, or cholesterol-lowering drugs
  • Regular health checkups to screen for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

How to prepare

While fasting is not strictly required for enzymes, a 6–8 hour fast provides the clearest sample if lipid or ultrasound checks are also planned. Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours prior.

Questions people ask

What does elevated SGOT and SGPT mean?

SGOT and SGPT are enzymes inside liver cells. When liver cells are inflamed (due to viral hepatitis, alcohol, fatty liver, or medicines), these enzymes leak into the blood, raising test levels.

What causes high bilirubin in adults?

High bilirubin can be caused by viral hepatitis, gallstones blocking the bile duct, alcohol-related liver injury, or rapid red blood cell breakdown (haemolysis).

Is fatty liver dangerous?

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is very common in diabetes and obesity. If left unchecked, it can progress to liver inflammation (NASH) and scarring over years.
