My child is refusing food and fluids. When is it serious?

Quick answer

Refusing solid food during a fever or cold is normal, but refusing all fluids is a medical concern. If your child has passed no urine for over 6 hours, cries without tears, or has cracked dry lips, they are becoming dehydrated. At Nareddy Care in Tirupati, Paediatrician Dr. Bramhini Nareddy examines the throat and mouth for painful ulcers, checks hydration status, and provides day-care oral rehydration guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is it dangerous if my child refuses to eat rice or roti for 2 days?

Children naturally lose appetite for solid foods during illness. As long as they drink adequate fluids (ORS, coconut water, milk, or soups) and pass urine regularly, skipping solids for a few days causes no harm.

How can I get my child to drink when their throat hurts?

Offer small sips (5 to 10 mL) every 5 minutes using a spoon, syringe, or straw rather than a full glass. Cold liquids, tender coconut water, or mild curd are soothing to inflamed throats.

When does a child need IV fluids (a drip)?

A child needs a day-care IV drip if they vomit every single sip of fluid, have signs of moderate-to-severe dehydration, or become excessively weak and lethargic.
