Written by Dr. Bramhini Nareddy, MD (Paediatrics)Paediatrician-Neonatologist (MD, Paediatrics) · 6 min readVaccines protect infants against life-threatening bacterial and viral illnesses including polio, tetanus, whooping cough, pneumonia, and rotavirus diarrhea. Following the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) timetable ensures your baby builds strong immunity at the right developmental milestones.

Birth to 14 weeks: the critical start
- At Birth: BCG (Tuberculosis), Hepatitis B (dose 1), and OPV (Polio drops)
- 6 Weeks: 6-in-1 (DTwP/DTaP, Hib, Hep B, IPV), Rotavirus, Pneumococcal (PCV)
- 10 Weeks: 6-in-1 dose 2, Rotavirus dose 2, PCV dose 2
- 14 Weeks: 6-in-1 dose 3, Rotavirus dose 3, PCV dose 3
6 months to 1 year milestones
- 6 & 7 Months: Influenza (annual flu vaccine, 2 doses 4 weeks apart)
- 9 Months: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) dose 1, Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV)
- 12 Months: Hepatitis A (dose 1), Japanese Encephalitis if in endemic area
Painless vs painful vaccines: what is the difference?
The difference lies in the whooping cough (pertussis) component. Painless (acellular DTaP) causes significantly less fever, crying, and local swelling than whole-cell (DTwP) vaccines, while offering equivalent clinical protection.
